Spring (April–May): As winter snow begins to melt, Tibet opens up with crisp blue skies and wildflowers in the valleys. This is an excellent time for cultural tours around Lhasa, Gyantse, and Shigatse, as well as early treks in lower-altitude areas. Temperatures are cool but comfortable for sightseeing.

Summer (June–August): Popular travel season: The warmest time of the year, with long days and vibrant landscapes. Summer brings the high season for travel, especially for pilgrimages and treks. Despite occasional rain, most days are clear and perfect for visiting monasteries, turquoise lakes such as Yamdrok, and high passes. July and August are also festival months, with traditional Tibetan opera and horse-racing events.

Autumn (September–October): Peak season to visit Tibet. The weather is dry and stable, the air is crystal clear, and mountain views are at their most spectacular. This is the ideal time for trekking around Mount Kailash, exploring Everest Base Camp on the Tibetan side, or enjoying the golden colors of the high plateau.

Winter (November–March): Low season. Cold but deeply rewarding for cultural travellers. Fewer tourists mean quieter monasteries and more authentic encounters with local life. While high-altitude trekking is limited, Lhasa and surrounding areas remain accessible, and the clear winter skies often reveal the Himalayas in striking detail.

The primary gateway to Tibet is Lhasa Gonggar Airport (LXA), which receives frequent flights from major Chinese cities including Chengdu, Chongqing, Xining, and Beijing. Chengdu remains the most convenient hub, offering multiple daily connections to Lhasa. For those seeking a scenic approach, the Qinghai–Tibet Railway offers remarkable train journeys, departing from cities such as Xining, Chengdu, and Beijing. This route gradually ascends across the Tibetan Plateau, offering stunning views and helping with acclimatization. Overland entry via Nepal is also possible through the Gyirong border, but it requires the Tibet Group Visa (issued in Kathmandu) and coordinated travel arrangements on both sides of the border. Once in Tibet, private vehicles—with driver and guide—are the standard mode of travel, enabling smooth access to monasteries, high passes and Himalayan viewpoints.
